Again, it's great to see a quirky (some might say questionable) choice like Flesh and Bone here, but one has to wonder whether HFPA tuned in to HBO in mid-to-late Aug


In television, it was Showtime that came out on top, with three awards all stemming from brand new series. Matt Leblanc took home Best Actor (comedy or musical) for playing a fictionalized version of himself on the UK import Episodes , while Homeland not only brought home a Golden Globe for Claire Danes as Best Actress (drama), but it also gave Showtime its first ever award for Best Ser


This almost feels like an impossible choice. Both actresses consistently bring their A-game to a pair of television shows that are incredibly fun to watch, even if they tend to stray from being great television from time to time. Honestly, if either woman were to win for this category it would feel like a win for television in general. Henson is long overdue for some recognition for her work on Empire – and that series is only halfway through its second season, if that tells you anything. Green, meanwhile, has been making Showtime's macabre, gothic adventure program, Penny Dreadful , her own since that series' second epis


And, honestly, it's difficult to say what exactly can be done to fix this. The obvious answer is "nominate films people have seen," but that is a little disingenuous to the acclaimed movies that did get nominated. Whiplash , Boyhood , Recommended Internet site Birdman , and The Grand Budapest Hotel may not have become mainstream hits, but they all have their passionate supporters among cinephiles and received a boost in awareness thanks to the Oscar label. Maybe if studios made these awards contenders more readily available , they'd attract a wider audie

One scene I could have done without (and to me really seemed like non-sequiter) took place in a gay bar, with a quick shot of two guys trying to swallow each other's tounges. I really didn't need to see that and when thinking about the movie as a whole, I don't really see what the point of that scene was. Really the only reason it seemed to be in there was because it was an indie film and one must show solidar

For me, this is one of those rough reviews to write... where I really have to think about what my criteria is for deciding whether a movie is "great", "good", or "bad". I'll admit my reviews can be subjective - I don't just rate films based on technical quality, but on how they make me feel.
